Golf Hypnosis FAQs

You may not realise it, but you have been in a trance – in hypnosis – many times already today and without necessarily being consciously aware of it. No, I’m not trying to insult you, just stating a simple truth.

What’s he talking about now?

Well, let me briefly explain. How many times have you “woken up” from a daydream and found that

  • you’re driving the car on a familiar journey and you can’t quite remember getting where you are – don’t worry, you may well have driven more safely
  • it’s the middle of the night and you’re still reading that book you got engrossed in last evening
  • you’re so engrossed in a film or sports programme on television and were completely oblivious to the fact that someone in the room’s asking you a question.

In these and many other naturally occurring trances you are consciously pre-occupied with one task while unconsciously carrying out another. By the way, you’ll automatically come out of the trance instantly in a real emergency – that’s another part of your unconscious programming.

What is Hypnosis and how does it work?

Hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed state of mind with a heightened sense of awareness. We bypass the conscious mind and bring the unconscious mind into focus. This provides the opportunity for unconscious mind to find the solutions and resources to deliver effective and permanent change.

What is NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming?

NLP is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. NLP provides us with a methodology to model outstanding performances achieved by successful people – including top golfers.

A key presupposition of NLP is that we form our unique internal mental maps of the world as a result of the way we filter and perceive information coming in through our five senses from the world around us.

Are Hypnosis and NLP widely used in Golf?

Almost every top professional golfer these days uses the services of a Golf Psychologist or Mind Coach and many of them use Hypnosis and NLP. Some like Tiger Woods use these techniques all their golfing lives and with obvious success. Clearly, not everyone has the best mind coach.

How will it feel when I’m in Hypnosis?

It’s simply like sitting in a chair relaxing with your eyes closed. You’ll feel deeply relaxed and calm, aware of everything around you. Like a pleasant day-dream or that wonderful feeling as your drifting off to sleep or waking up gently. And you are always in control. When you emerge from hypnosis you can expect to feel relaxed and energised.

Does the hypnotist have power over me?

You cannot be made to do anything in hypnosis that you don’t want to do or wouldn’t normally do. If I ask you to stand up, you will probably do it. If I suggest you rob a bank, you wouldn’t

Does hypnosis work for everyone?

Anyone can be hypnotised as long as they want to be, even people who are convinced that they cannot relax or be hypnotised.

What if I don’t “wake up” from Hypnosis?

The simple answer is that you can come out of trance any time you like, regardless of the hypnotist. It’s never happened.
