Have you made your New Years resolutions for your golf improvement – using golf psychology, perhaps? Well, even if you haven’t, I’m sure that many of you are excited about starting fresh, turning your life around and in some cases doing something about playing better golf. That’s fantastic! I know that 2010 is going to be an exciting year. I’m excited already, after completing my new book, The Secrets of Hypnotic Golf, over the holiday period. I’ve been talking about it for long enough and now its written, formatted and with the publisher, ready for launch late January or early February – Woo-hoo!

Coming back to those New Year’s resolutions, have you made your ones yet? No, don’t tell me what they are, that’s supposed to be unlucky. It’s enough that you’re clear about what you would like to change in your life and your golf in 2010? You know what you’d like to accomplish and where you want your life to go. That’s enough, isn’t it?

Well, I’ve got some bad news and some good news for you. Which would you like first? Okay, let’s start with the bad news. The bad news is that New Year’s resolutions generally don’t work …

So who’s using hypnosis to improve their golf performance – apart from Tiger Woods and maybe Phil Mickelson? Well, taking first things first, it’s difficult to be sure who’s using hypnosis because most people who do don’t want to let on. Why’s that? Well firstly, they want to keep the competitive edge that golf hypnosis gives them to themselves. Secondly, although it’s becoming acceptable for a top golfer to admit to using a mind coach, their marketing people are still wary of saying they use golf psychology or, worse still, hypnosis – that’s all to “new age.” You only have to look at the comments of Angel Cabrera, a real man’s man, after he won the Masters, “Now I don’t have a sports psychologist and I don’t smoke.”

If a golfer won’t tell you he’s using hypnosis, then what are the signs to look for to know he or she is? Well let’s take Tiger Woods as our first example. I’ve not heard him say that he uses hypnosis or read anything that confirms that he’s admitted it. However, just watch the controlled and methodical series of blinks he makes just before stepping into every shot. If that’s not a hypnotic trigger or anchor …

I’ve been watching Paul Casey’s golf improvement this year starting with his consistent golf performance in Abu Dhabi when he was talking optimistically about getting into the top 20 in the world. Now, with his second-place finish at the World Golf Championships at Dove Mountain and his consummate performance at the Shell Houston Open last weekend, he’s at number six on the world rankings. With his golf mind working this well, he’s surely one of the favourites to win this week at Augusta.

He played there after being told what a tough course it was going to be. He mentioned the great greens, the way that lots of run off areas were shaved down low and the high swirling winds. What a perfect set up in the run in to the Masters.

Casey was clearly focussed and in the zone …

You do not improve your swing and achieve golf success through analysis paralysis. People who teach complex swing thoughts just clutter the conscious mind and block out the unconscious mental processes that just know how to swing the club to the best of a player’s ability.

Now don’t get me wrong about the general standard of teaching from PGA golf professionals, it’s truly magnificent and in nearly always cases their swing coaching advice is well thought out, simple, elegant and tailored to the golfer in front of them.

So what am I griping about, you may ask? …

I read about so many expert golfers and golf experts – not always the same people – imploring us that golf is a mental game. Yet only a select band of golfers use any form of golf psychology assistance to improve their game. Now, I know you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this on a golf hypnosis website.

Let’s hear what a few of those experts say, beginning with my favourite golfer and ending with one from Bobby Jones …

An EFT for Better Golf story

What sort of success are other people having with EFT? Firstly let’s look at a quote from EFT Inventor, Gary Craig’s – one of many examples on his website. Gary talks about a golfer called Ron Johnson who improved his golf using EFT from scoring around 95-100 to having many rounds in the 70’s. Here’s what Ron told Gary.

As well as being used for Golf improvement, EFT™, the Emotional Freedom Technique in its traditional form is used by therapists with their clients and by individuals to reduce or eliminate all types of negative emotions including anger, fear, grief, trauma, anxiety and stress. It’s also often used to treat physical and physiological issues that may have an often unidentified, emotional component.

At this point, I’m obliged to stress that EFT is not a substitute for conventional medicine. You are advised to consult with your doctor and seek conventional treatments before using EFT to address any physical ailments or mental conditions. Phew, I’m glad to get that out of the way.

Here we are talking about using golf psychology for Golf Improvement. How many of us have a desire for golf improvement that’s so often stymied by negative thoughts, emotions and unresourceful states?

Along with Hypnosis and NLP, EFT has a place in this area of improvement …

I was working with a client recently who wanted golf improvement without formal hypnosis for a destructive problem he had when playing golf. Let’s call him Alan for the sake of client confidentiality. I’ve changed a few other details as well for the same reason. Alan’s an enthusiast at everything he does – from work to golf to family. The priority sequence changes, but the enthusiasm’s consistent across all three. He’s also as honest and true to his friends as the day is long.

So let’s focus on golf. Well Alan’s a hard-working golfer, practising or playing most days, somehow. He has a good swing, is excellent around the greens and is an instinctively superb putter. He’s good at visualisation as well and practices stepping into the shoes of his golfing heroes. He often practices on his own with two balls – one played in his mind by Tiger Woods and the other by Jack Nicklaus. He also works hard on his physical fitness with long cross-country walks and almost daily workouts in the pool – whatever the weather.

Alan’s problem in golf is that he consistently scores much worse than he should due to unforced errors – accidents you could say …

How much do you berate yourself when you play a bad shot at golf? If you’re a typical golfer the answer is pretty badly! In fact, you probably use language that you’d never use in public. It’s a good thing that you save the worst things for expression privately in your head. Just imagine how you would feel if your fourball or foursome partner said the same things to you after you hit a bad shot. You’d be horrified and you’d probably make a mental note never to play with them again.

What’s possibly worse is that many players have similar negative internal dialogue whenever they plan and execute a shot. They recall all the bad shots they’ve ever hit in this situation and focus more on what can go wrong than on what they’re trying to do …
